Happy NanoWrimo!! Who is participating this month? ⠀⠀ A couple of updates: ⠀⠀ 1. I’m attempting to write over 50,000 words. I’m about 5,100 words in and it feels so good to actually be writing again. It’s my favorite time of year. ⠀⠀ 2. I am bribing myself with leftover Halloween candy and hot drinks to write. I’ve been eating a lot of pumpkin-flavored things, and I don’t care if it’s cliche - they’re good. Teenage girls were RIGHT. (As we often are regarding politics/pop culture/everything, really.) ⠀⠀ 3. This is my dog in my glasses. I’m in college and I haven’t seen him in two weeks. No amount of Pumpkin Spice Lattes can make up his absence. 💛 💛 #dog #book #writer #writing #bookstagram #amwriting #writingcommunity #read
This is a photo from the Miami bookstore “Books & Books,” but I think a more accurate name would be “Books & Books & Books & Books & Books & Books etc.” (This is why I have trouble titling things. All my titles are approximately 635 miles long. None of them can fit in a headline. Or on a book cover. But of course, that’s wishful thinking.) 💛 💛 #book #writer #writing #bookstagram #read #shelfie #bookstore #booksandbooks
“Keep your eyes on your own page.” One of the many things that my elementary school teacher told me that’s still relevant to my writing career. (Some other examples include “You can have your snack after you finish reading” and “Stop kicking your seat partner and do your work,” two productivity strategies I still employ today.) 💛 💛 I haven’t written as much this summer as I would have liked to: two chapters. Two short stories. Two poems. I’ve spent more time comparing myself to other writers: am I as good? As literary? As publishable? Time to keep my eyes on my own page again. I only dislike my writing when I’m not writing. 💛 💛 What’s your favorite thing you’ve written this summer? Mine’s a strong tie between a short story about a violent hamster and a rewrite of my first chapter. 💛 💛 # #book #writer #writing #bookstagram #amwriting #read
Procrastinating writer in her natural habitat. 💛 💛 PSA: I just read Ann Patchett’s “Getaway Car,” a short memoir on writing, and if you want something that nicely shames you into working on your book again you should too. I’ve never read someone who had a writing process so similar to my own (I thought I was the only one who wrote my books in my head first & was disappointed when the writing could never live up to what I imagined!) There are so many quotable lines, but here is one of my favorites: “Forgiveness, therefore, is key. I can’t write the book I want to write, but I can and will write the book I am capable of writing.” Inspired me to go back to work! 💛 💛 ⠀⠀ #book #writer #writing #amwriting #bookstagram #annpatchett #stonesoupbooks
